21st Division landed in France in September, 1915 and were immediately thrown, untried and untested into the cauldron of the Battle of Loos at great cost for all involved, including 8th East Yorkshire of 62 Brigade. With that awful experience behind them, 21st Division spent the winter of 1915-1916 in the Armentières-Houplines sector of the Western Front. Herbert Smith was killed in action on 31st March, 1916, but as yet there is no information as to the circumstances of his death. |
